Product Description

Say Swedish Lapland and images of a pristine mountain landscape, arctic wildlife, the living Sami culture and Aurora borealis soon come to mind. This course brings it all to life! Photograph the alluring Aurora, meet the Sámi people and drive your own reindeer sled through the ancient boreal forest. Lonely Planet recently ranked Abisko as the number one location in the world to see the Aurora.

Our tour includes 2 nights in Abisko and 2 nights at Reindeer Lodge in Jukkasjärvi next to the world famous ICEHOTEL. This 5 day tour is the result of the most spectacular itinerary that we could possibly assemble, and includes many things you won’t find anywhere else. Thanks to small groups (max 7 guests) the itinerary can be very flexible, offering the very best chances of capturing the images you long for.

Your guide will be professional photographer Peter Rosén – LapplandMedia & PhotoAdventures. With more than 20 years of experience in photographing Aurora borealis, the Arctic landscape and wildlife, Peter offers you an in-depth photo course on how to capture aurora, stars, galaxies, Sámi culture, wildlife and the spellbinding midwinter landscape in the best possible way. Peter has a background as an associate professor in environmental science in Abisko, which contributes to his in-depth knowledge of Arctic nature, the Sami people and the story behind Aurora borealis.

This all-inclusive course includes visits to Abisko National Park, reindeer photographing, driving your own reindeer sled through the forest with award winning Nutti Sámi Siida, allowing us to take unique shots of this old traditional way of travelling in Sápmi. We will also take a snowmobile ride to a traditional Sami Tentipi tent. Depending on your preference, we can also try to find and photograph moose, visit the ICEHOTEL and more. We are very flexible and want to make the very best of your time with us. During your entire stay we have access to an AWD VW minibus and snowmobile, which means you let us know where you want to go, our flexibility will get you there!

The tour is part of the Canon Photography School and thanks to Canon and Manfrotto, we can offer amateur and professional SLR cameras, lenses (8-500mm), tripods, Ditogear motorized time lapse rail specially designed for northern lights photography – without any additional cost.

Why should you choose LapplandMedia & PhotoAdventures for your next photo adventure?

100% success rate on our multi-day Aurora tours 5 years in a row says probably quite a lot about our tours. We are truly dedicated to ensuring our guest’s satisfaction and proud to say that we are the winner of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award. We are the only company in Swedish Lapland who can offer guided photo tours with true professional photographers all year round. We have been running photo courses in Abisko and Swedish Lapland at least 10 years longer than any other company in the area and we are the only company working with professional photographers coming from Swedish Lapland (other photo companies in Abisko run tours with Chinese, American and English guides) and we run tours with much smaller groups (max 7 guests). We can truly say that we have much better local knowledge about being up in the mountains, important not only for safety reasons but also important for good images and stories about living in the Arctic. We welcome you to our own back garden. We might be the only company in the world with a 100% success rate on Aurora photo tours. The fleeting nature of the northern lights means it is naturally difficult to guarantee you will see them, but to date we have been thrilled! This means that all previous guests participating on multi-day tours over the past four years have seen and captured the Aurora in beautiful environments.

Day 1 Lapland Landscapes, Reindeer and Aurora Borealis: After lunch we will head to Reindeer Lodge where you can light a fire and settle in to your cosy cabin in the forest. We’ll then photograph the reindeer in the forest before a wood-heated sauna and some dinner. Keeping an eye on the weather and the aurora forecast, it will then be time to rug up and head out to aurora hunting! We will go to whichever location will give us the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis, and we have many stunning locations to choose from.

Day 2 Reindeer Sledding and Aurora Borealis: As the name suggests, Reindeer Lodge is a reindeer herding camp and is owned by a Sámi family who today take us for an exhilarating and very unique experience. You will be allocated your own reindeer and lead it to your sled, where you will be instructed on how to handle your sled and reindeer. We then go off into snow-covered forest and onto frozen lakes for several hours, making stops for photography along the way. It is the traditional way for Sámi to travel and a magical experience. Returning to camp, we then eat a traditional Sami lunch around the fire inside a lavvu (a traditional teepee tent), followed by more photography, tuition and perhaps a wood-heated sauna. After dinner, we again go aurora hunting, a pattern we repeat each and every night. If the Aurora comes out to dance, we are often out quite late! (but trust us, you will forget you are tired if you are watching the aurora!)

Day 3 To the Mountains, Landscapes and Aurora Borealis: Today we make our way to Abisko, about 90 minutes drive, whilst stopping along the way for photo opportunities. We watch the landscape change as we head towards the mountains and the border with Norway, along Lake Torneträsk. We have lunch at STF Abisko Mountain Station, and settle into our accommodation before heading out again to photograph the mid-winter landscape of Abisko National Park. After our sumptuous 3 course dinner, it’s time to rug up either take a snow mobile ride into the Abisko valley or the minibuss to a nice photo spot. We are flexible to maximize our chances for good Aurora images. We return to our hotel around midnight for the night and a well-deserved sleep.

Day 4 Midwinter Landscapes and Aurora Borealis: Today is a mix of outdoor photography and tuition, and quite flexible depending largely on weather. Abisko National Park and surroundings are an adventurers playground, and offer a diverse range of subject matter for great photography. After dinner, we jump on a snowmobile and head into the wilderness to a traditional lavvu, set up in our own location to provide a wonderful foreground for the aurora, or a great subject to photograph in it’s own right. We’ll also have a fire in the tent and have a chance to sit and talk about all things Swedish and photography! It’s a wonderful time to reflect on our trip and spend time with new friends in the group, who by now know each other well.

Day 5 Departure: After dragging ourselves out of bed and having breakfast, you depart at a civilized mid-morning time to the airport in Kiruna, back to Stockholm or any other destination you may have (or onward to other destinations). You may like to spend more time in Stockholm, or stop over at one of the many wonderful European destinations close-by on your way home.  By now you will want to sleep for a million years, but you will not be able to wipe the smile from your face.
